John B. R. Long III is Partner and Head of Global Marketing for Kurt Salmon, based in New York. He has 20-plus years of deep experience in all facets of the retail & consumer products industry, both as a retail executive at such firms as Macy’s, SunVision and Beiersdorf S.p.A., and as a consultant.
John has extensive retail strategy experience (to include consumer research, market entry, financial assessments, turnarounds, restructurings and due diligence) and operating skills across a broad spectrum of functional disciplines (to include marketing/branding, buying, planning, merchandising, competitive and markdown pricing, in-store operations and IT outsourcing).
His clients include the boards, CEOs and senior-level executives at many of the world’s most recognized companies, including Apple, Benetton, Belk, Brooks Brothers, The Children’s Place, Home Depot, IKEA, Juicy Couture, McDonald’s, Neiman Marcus, NIKE, Warnaco and many more. Over the years, John has led projects in 10 countries on three continents including in Russia and China. John is a regular speaker at prestigious industry events and a frequently quoted retail industry expert across television (CBS, CNBC’s “Power Lunch”, ABC PBS), radio (NPR Marketplace), newspapers (The Wall Street Journal, USA Today), news services (AP) and other publications.
In addition to his client work, John has held several key leadership roles at Kurt Salmon: Head of Global Marketing (2010 - present) and Chair, Global Innovation Council (2009)
He has a B.A. from the University of Virginia and an M.B.A. from The Anderson School at UCLA. John lives in Connecticut with his wife, the interior designer Susan Bednar Long, and their two children.
